Work underway on LPP projects

The Languages Policy Partnership (LPP) has agreed to commission several research projects to support development of language policy that meets the needs of communities. Work has started on two of these projects, a new National Collections Strategy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Languages, and a National Interpreting and Translating Framework.

FLA is working with Aboriginal Interpreting Western Australia on development of the National Interpreting and Translating Framework. Over the coming months, consultations will be held with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander interpreters and translators from across the continent to make sure their voices are heard in this work.

Work has also started on a new National Collections Strategy. Many communities find it difficult to access or have returned to them materials in their languages held in institutions like museums, libraries and archives. Other communities need support and resources to look after their own language collections in the way they want to. FLA is working with the Language Data Commons of Australia (LDaCA) to develop this strategy. Staff have been visiting communities across Australia to hear how this work can best support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. FLA and LDaCA will be visiting more communities over the next few months, and the strategy is planned to be completed in 2026.
