Place names

First Languages Australia’s conversations around the recognition of place names are continuing. To support community-led activities across the continent, a position statement is now available.

In the coming months, we will be working with each of the states and territories to document the ways they are working with communities to see landscapes and Country appropriately represented in government databases. With increased public interest, community language organisations are receiving more requests for place information. To help reduce this burden, communities can request that their place names be added to the Gambay place names page. We will be working with the ABC to promote this page in the second half of the year. And, the ABC This Place project is starting again - so contact us if you’re interested in being involved.
